The BrainPort is alive and well. See it at

If you are looking at other synthetic vision approaches, may I suggest the
vOICe from http://www.seeingwithsound.com?

What do you want to do with your vision? I ask since many things can be
achieved with the right set of tools. For example, I can see images using
the vOICe but may use my cane or sonar if I only wanted obstacle avoidance.
