Hello AccMailers ...

Recent posts to this list have prompted these thoughts ...

LIST LANGUAGE

The language of the list is English. This is *not*
because we think English is a superior language, but
because it is more widely read, written and understood
than other languages. As such, it is the best medium for
exchanging information and ideas.

I would like to suggest the following guidelines for
posts and replies ...

1. Always try to write your message in English. It does
*not* matter if your English is not perfect -- as
long as we can understand it, it is acceptable. There
is no need to apologise for 'poor' English -- just be
happy that you are learning a useful skill.

2. If you are *really* unsure, append the message in
your own language -- but only if ...

2.a. the language character set is compatible with
the list (unfortunately, this excludes major
                languages such as Russian, Arabic, Chinese);

2.b. you have reason to believe that some other
members of the list understand it.

3. Replies to the list should always use English.
Remember that you may also reply privately to the
   original post in any language.

4. Always use 'International' English -- that is, use
simple grammar and vocabulary, and avoid national
   idiom and jargon.

Most list members use English as a second or foreign
language, and will sympathise with those who find it
difficult. Members who use English as a first language
will also understand the problem.

OPINIONS AND DISAGREEMENTS

In normal real-world life, conversations between people
do not depend solely on words -- body language and
facial expressions are also an important part of the
message.

When we use email, these factors are missing -- the
message is conveyed by words alone. It is *very* easy to
create misunderstandings or impressions of personal
disagreements which do not really exist. Email veterans
are aware of these issues, but many members of this list
have started using email quite recently.

It is OK to disagree -- but always explain why, and
please be *extra* careful not to imply, accidentally,
that other subscribers may lack judgement, understanding
or faith.
