mail2news@anon.lcs.mit.edu problem report

I may have missed details posted to the list, but
I seem to recall reports of problems with the
anon.lcs.mit.edu  mail2news gateway (Henceforth 'lcs').
I thought I'd post what I have found out about the
problem, maybe someone can fill in more detail
or explination of what is going on.
Apologies if this information has already been figured out
and posted.

I recently found myself in need of the gateway
when a new version of a program I frequently use had
problems posting to a news group.
After getting a fresh copy of the instructions,
I tried using the lcs gateway and my attempt bounced
with a message indicating something about a bad
Message-ID: header.
I then set to work using emacs's mail capabilities,
which I had recently learned enough to give a try.
The particular point in using emacs was that you can
explicitly edit in mail headers (as in fact the help
message for lcs recommends).
After a few more stabs, using the error messages
and comparisons with actual posts, I was able to get my message
posted to the list, taking into account two apparent requirements:
1) what follows the '@' in the Message-ID value field
   has to be a domain name that can actually be resolved from
   from where lcs is on the Internet.
2) then entire body of the Message-ID value field has to
   be bracketed in a '<...>' pair.

I tried asking the postmaster at lcs, as listed in the mail2news
help text, and have so far only recieved an automated response.
Again, apologies if this has already been posted here,
or for any inaccruacies.
