You know, all the pleasure of gmail is in its advanced web interface
(message search, message threading, labels you can assign to messages,
instant notification about incoming messages, address auto-complete as
you type, smart quoting). In other words, GMail brings working with
email via browser to the level of convinience available in offline
mail clients (Eudora, The Bat!, M2 of Opera etc.)

There are pop3 and smtp available at gmail (since a couple of
weeks only), but it does not make sense to use Gmail as a pop3
mailbox: if you use Gmail just as a pop3 mailbox you loose all
the nice web things it was created in mind with, so I would say
there is no need to beggar for Gmail invitation if you need
just a pop3 mailbox. There are plenty of websites that offer
free pop3 mailboxes (for example softhome.net, yahoo.it, yahoo.ca)
where you can create an account without any invitation.

Another advantage of Gmail is its huge mailbox size = 1000Mb. But if
you download you mail frequently (and thus make you inbox empty) this
advantage means nothing for you. I would say, it is an advantage for
those who does not read their mail(or does it too seldom).
Or, for those who reads their mail via browser only.
Think if it applies to you.

And since Gmail is a thing that is nice to use (or worth to use) via
browser with live internet connection only, discussing it in
"Accessing Internet by Email" list is close to offtopic, I think.

PS. But there is one unbeatable argument for Gmail: it will most
likely be as stable as Google itself. You can expect your Gmail inbox
to be always accessible, mailservers for incoming and outgoing mail to
be never down. Google has huge fleet of computers, when one of them is
down they just replace it with another so they have enough time for
thorough repairs while non-stop servicing you.
