Unfortunately the number of fin whales feeding in the Bay has been declining recently and the research carried out by Marinelife and Orca on the Pride of Bilbao was starting to provide detailed data and understanding of these animals which could have had a impact on the conservation of the species. This research will now have to stop. The P&O route follows the shelf edge waters favoured by large rorquals much more closely during daylight hours than the Brittany route and the good relationship between P&O and Marinelife meant the captain would alter the route slightly (if there was time) so that Marinelife could gather data on the shelf edge waters for longer. Hopefully Marinelife can now form a similar partnership with Brittany Ferries so the research can continue, but the P&O route was ideal for this purpose.
