IMG_1660.JPGIMG_1651.JPG I think these will be a variation of "Ice Flowers", our examples found in the Ashdown Forest caused some interest a few years ago. It seems conditions have to be just right, in our case very wet wood then froze causing the ice to expand in these shapes. Vic Downer did a tasting and declared it was ice! See the following link for spectacular examples. http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en-GB <http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en-GB&q=ice+flowers&sourceid=navclient -ff&rlz=1B3GGGL_en-GBGB333GB334&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=4SGVS-2fMtm5jAfjsKX_Cg&sa=X &oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CBgQsAQwAA> &q=ice+flowers&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B3GGGL_en-GBGB333GB334&um=1&ie=UTF -8&ei=4SGVS-2fMtm5jAfjsKX_Cg&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ve d=0CBgQsAQwAA and http://my.ilstu.edu/~jrcarter/ice/ Roger 1 Church Cottages Mountfield East Sussex TN32 5JS batsurv...@tiscali.co.uk Tel: 01580 88 0431 Mobile: 07790 53 0870 From: adastra-boun...@lists.sxbrc.org.uk [mailto:adastra-boun...@lists.sxbrc.org.uk] On Behalf Of pennygr...@sussexwt.org.uk Sent: 08 March 2010 12:32 To: adastra@lists.sxbrc.org.uk Subject: [Adastra] Ice Mushrooms Hello everyone, Whilst walking in Kingley Vale a few weeks ago, we noticed lots of icy protrusions coming from the ground. On further inspection we noticed that they were mostly all mushroom-shaped, and were coming out of individual lumps of chalk as if the water had been drawn out of the chalk and in to this distinct shape. We'd never seen this before, has anyone else? I attach some pictures in case you're interested!
