| Hello, I'm interested to learn more about any studies or perceived wisdom about the benefits of small clearings cut on the sunny fringes of mixed shrubbery, e.g. hawthorn, dogwood etc. I'm thinking of small bays that are about 20-30 ft across. The tendency is for bramble to encroach so it is kept cut back to allow the ground flora to flourish. The main plant i have observed in early spring is Ground Ivy, Glechoma hederacea. Others follow but this seems to an important herb for early species of bees and flies and flourishes in this type of space. These areas seem especially rich in certain flora as they are sheltered from severe weather and don't become swamped in the dominant grasses.
