Although ArcGIS has a monopoly on the geostat analyst and outside of academia, 
it is hard to find users of Matlab, R, etc...it is possible to combine a GIS 
graphical User Interface with modeling software. For instance, ArcEngine can be 
used to create standalone applications containing some interesting GIS features 
and functions, and can be "linked" to geostatistical modeling software (R, 
Matlab) through the use of COM objects or dynamic linked libraries 
(dlls)...some sort of a hybrid possibility between the two.
