Agence France-Presse Saturday April 13, 8:53 PM Five held after ISAF security patrol attacked in Kabul Five Afghan policemen have been arrested by international troops in Kabul after they were apparently mistaken for attackers who opened fire on security patrols. The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan said it detained seven men after exchanging fire with a gang of around 30 in the western area of the capital. But, according to interior ministry official Din Mohammad Jurat, five of those arrested claim to be police officers who had arrived to investigate the gunfire. The two others were identified as a "military force" officer and a civilian security guard. "We will investigate the case. But this is what apparently these detainees are saying," Jurat said Saturday. "It is not yet clear if they had also given a hand to the criminals." ISAF spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Neal Peckham said the security force had received no prior warning of any Afghan police or military operations and had returned fire after deciding the gunmen's presence was "questionable". There were no injuries. "The armed group has been reported to be up to 30 men strong," he said. "Individuals in this armed group fired weapons -- five rounds at both standing patrols in the area." "We have detained seven men. Five of them in police uniform, one in civilian uniform and one in combats, all carrying AK-47s." ISAF troops also spotted a vehicle carrying armed men but it escaped, Peckham added. Security forces in the Afghan capital have been on heightened alert following an assassination attempt against interim Defence Minister Mohammad Qasim Fahim and an alleged anti-government plot. Several patrols have come under fire in Kabul over recent weeks, but there have been no casualties. Last week a British ISAF patrol was attacked by a vigilante group which mistook the troops for armed robbers. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
