In statements to Prensa Latina in Buenos Aires, PCA general secretary Patricio Echegaray highlighted that the Bolivarian movement in Venezuela expressed the intention of an independent foreign policy and a domestic policy opposing neoliberalism. The government of President Hugo Chavez sought the unity of oil producing countries, fostered a relationship of solidarity and respect with Cuba, and did not allow foreign planes to use its air space to bomb Colombian territories, he pointed out. For Echegaray, Chavez and his administration were trying to oppose FTAA (the Free Trade Area of the Americas) and reach agreements with other governments of the region to create an anti-FTAA front, "something very valuable for our people." He considered that this free trade project fostered by the US "is an imperialist maneuver to completely annex and submit the continent to US interests." "For these reasons, the coup was encouraged, with the involvement of the US embassy in Caracas, the US state department, and former secretary of state Henry Kissinger," he noted. Top management, trade union bureaucracy, groups of instigators, and the military leadership were also involved. The same thing happened during the 1973 coup in Chile, when Salvador Allende was overthrown, the PCA member added. According to Echegaray, what happened in Venezuela is very dangerous because it fosters new actions against democracy and the people of Latin American, and encourages the right with throughout the continent.
