Interfax: Abkhazia concerned about U.S., NATO
assistance to Georgia
Europe Intelligence Wire - October 13, 2002 12:03am

SUKHUMI. Oct 11 (Interfax) - The Republic of Abkhazia
said it is concerned about Georgia's increasing
military capabilities, thanks to U.S. and NATO
programs in the country.

"The active role the U.S. and other NATO countries are
playing in helping Georgia increase its military
capabilities is worrisome," Abkhazia's Defense
Minister Raul Khadzhimba told Interfax on Friday.

He said that Georgia is receiving sophisticated
military hardware, and its officers are being trained
in the West. NATO has sent its military advisors and
provided financing for training exercises. The
alliance is effectively helping Georgia create a navy.
This adds to the danger of new hostilities, the
defense minister said.
