Dennis:

Intuitively I was doubtful that a thin waterproof glove could keep my
hand and trigger-finger warm. A sweat-covered hand is certainly not very
effectively insulated. But intuition does not always provide the correct
answer. And I did not know
how important evaporative heat loss might be when the hand is in a
non-waterproof glove or mitten. After all, considerable heat
is taken from the hand when sweat evaporates. If evaporation were prevented,
would my hands be noticeably warmer?
I put on a pair of medium-thickness cotton gloves, then covered them
with a snug-fitting pair of waterproof Edmont spraying
gloves here in the warm house. When I had all the other necessary warm clothes
on, and electric pruner on my body, the gloves had equilibrated with my warm
hands and I was ready to go out into the 25F orchard to test the importance of
blocked evaporation.
Oh; the Edmont glove gauntlets had been tucked inside the sleeves of my Dry-Q
jacket while still indoors.
I was surprised to find that my hands were not cold for the ten or
fifteen minutes I spent pruning the first tree. Over the next
15-20 minutes my trigger finger was beginning to get my attention; and within
less than 45 minutes total, I had to abandon the project
because of that painful trigger finger.
Maybe your guys have naturally warm hands.
