Four Asom writers get Sahitya Akademi awards Our Bureau NEW DELHI/ GUWAHATI/DIBRUGARH, Dec 26: Four litterateurs from Asom are among the 30 writers who have been named as winners of Sahitya Akademi Award, 2007 today. The four writers from Asom are: Purabi Burmudoi for her novel Santanu Kulanandan, Boro writer Janil Kumar Brahma for his novel Damphaoni Phitha, Anjali Daimary for her Bodo translation of Dr Indira Goswamis Adha Likha Dastabej and Malaya Khound for Tanti Burha, a translation from an Oriya novel. Purabi Bormudoi has novels like Gajraj, Prem aru Banditwa and Rupuwali Noir Hunuwali Ghat to her credit. When asked about how she felt about winning the award, Bormudoi said that she was thrilled when her husband conveyed her the message. Bormudoi had been nominated for the award on earlier occasions but had failed to win it. The novel for which she has won the award was written in 2005, and it dwells on the growth of civilization and rivers. Talking about what inspires her, Bormudoi said she draws inspiration from the wind, dust and leaves of trees. She stated that one just needs a sharp eye for details and involvement to do well in anything, not just writing. Daughter of Chandranath Tamuli and Padma Tamuli, Purabi Bormudoi was born on May 8, 1950 at Tezpur. She is the eldest of five children. Bormudoi passed her matriculation from Tezpur Girls Higher Secondary School in 1967 and took her graduation from Darrang College in 1973. She did her postgraduation in History from Gauhati University in 1976. She is married to Dr Ananda Bormudoi of the Department of English in Dibrugarh University. Bormudoi is yet to fully recover from the paralytic stroke that she suffered in May, 2006. She said a lot of hard work, intense study and dedication go into writing a novel. The writer said she found happiness in writing and could not think of life without it. She is keen on completing her two novels, which she was in the process of writing when she took ill. Anjali Daimary is the daughter of Late Kushen Daimary and Tarali Daimary of Darrang district. Her husband is Artex Shimrey. (The Sentinel,27.12.2007)
