A really sad news. Biswajeet Saikia, one of the most-energetic young men I have ever met, passed away this morning in Delhi. He was undergoing dialysis for quite some time following kidney ailment. Biswajeet, as those who have interacted with him would know, was someone who had immense energy despite his long-time health condition, and had a huge number of plans - and dreams - for Assam and the North-East. An alumni of JNU, he was associated with the National Commission for the Unorganized Sector and recently with the Centre for North-East Studies at the Jamia Millia Islamia University. He leaves behind his wife Alka and their little son. When I met him at the Bhogali Bihu celebrations in Delhi on Jan 17th, he looked much calmer than his usually gung ho avatar. The dialysis had surely taken its toll on him, and he had told me, "Mor Abastha to beya, gom paisei nohoy." Who knew he would be snatched away from amidst us just three weeks later.
There will be a memorial meeting to pay tribute to Biswajeet Saikia at the Centre for North-East Studies at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi on Monday (15th Feb) at 2:30 pm. - Utpal Borpujari
