Rini Kakati lives in Harlesden, London She is a senior education & welfare 
worker for ethnic minorities in  Department of Social Services at London 
Borough of Tower Hamlet and Brent. She had her MA degree in English Literature 
from Gauhati University. She also had PGCE (TEFL) from University of North 
London. She teaches English to the speaker of other language at Adult Education 
Centre in Wembley. She became the first women Governor at Newfield school in 
Harlesden. She also conducted the popular programme called "Speak for yourself" 
at BBC from March 1979 till 1982. This programme was specially designed to 
encourage people to communicate with each other.
 
She is the active member of UK's ruling Labour Party from Brent. In 2004, she 
organised for the first time NRI Convention seminar at House of Lords, 
Westminster as Co-ordinator for NECCI (North East Chamber of Commerce & 
Industry) under the guidance of Lord Swraj Paul, Lord Dholakia, Lady Ann, Lord 
Patel, MP Paul Andrew Daisley, Councillor Ron Anderson and ministers of Indian 
High Commission along with representatives from various Indian communities 
including media people were also attended.  
 
She was recognised for her outstanding career and community work, socially, 
educationally and culturally spanning 35 years. Recently she was presented with 
the prestigious ‘Glory of India Award’ by the India International Society on 
July 18, 2009. She is the first Assamese lady to receive this prestigious award.
 
Her Majesty : The Queen Elizabeth II has specially invited to honour her at 
Buckingham Palace Garden party in July 2010 this year.
