I can see this working with users that haven't got a set routine on how they explore a story. I for instance will read a story, and then for background information and further reading, will middle-click all the interesting links so they are ready and open in the background to read afterwards. This 'live preview' linking of content might add some value to users who want to stay on the same page, and only want small chunks of info to accompany their reading.
