07/22/2002 - Fort Washington, PA. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PENNDOT) will hold a public meeting on Thursday, August 1, to update business operators and residents about the upcoming closure of Bethlehem Pike in Whitemarsh Township, Montgomery County, for the replacement of the bridge over SEPTA's commuter rail line. The August 1 meeting will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Germantown Academy's Arts Center Theater, 340 Morris Road, Fort Washington. Residents and business owners are encouraged to attend. At the meeting, PENNDOT engineers will review plans, traffic impacts and timetables for replacing the 92-year old bridge, and for relocating the nearby intersection of Morris Road, Lafayette Avenue and Bethlehem Pike. Bethlehem Pike will be closed and detoured during bridge construction. PENNDOT plans to begin demolition and reconstruction of the Bethlehem Pike Bridge in spring 2003, following completion of the construction to relocate the intersection of Morris Road, Lafayette Avenue and Bethlehem Pike. The intersection work is scheduled to begin this fall. The Bethlehem Pike Bridge replacement is expected to be completed in early 2004. The bridge and intersection improvements are being done under one contract in conjunction with PENNDOT's $200 million reconstruction of the State Route 309 Expressway. The bridge and intersection work is one of numerous improvements to local roads being completed in an effort to improve traffic flow in advance of the major reconstruction of the 10-mile expressway.
