The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has given the PA Turnpike Commission the go ahead to design and build the I-95 PA Turnpike Interchange and a new south span of the Turnpike Bridge. The Bicycle Coalition has been working with other groups and agencies to get a bike/ped facility on the bridge, which would connect the East Coast Greenway with the Delaware River Heritage trail in NJ. Because of the large influx of letters received by the commission The FHWA's Record of Decision [ http://www.paturnpike.com/i95/selected_alternatives.htm ] elaborates on the possibility of a bike/ped facility on the bridge. FHWA's response was basically no but they may reconsider if certain conditions are met. That's an improvement from the Pennsylvania Turnpike position which has been never ever. Construction on the bridge not expected until after 2012, so as we learned in the Shawshank Redemption "Time and Pressure" is all you need. Thanks to everyone who wrote to the Turnpike Commission especially to Ken Edmonds for spearheading this effort.
