Gleaned from NJT and SEPTA Websites, have fun while
I sleep
If you are thinking about taking your bike make
sure its a folder, NJ Transit trains to NY do not allow full-size bikes on major
holidays including New Years Day, (You can bring your bike on
any Atlantic City Line train) and most of the SEPTA trains leaving Center
CIty will be packed.
Leaving Philadelp
Regional Rail Lines will provide additional
service to accommodate late night riders. Click below to see individual
schedules for each route.
If you cannot click on the links go to http://www.septa.org/promo/holiday03.html
Leaving New York

NJT Trains leaving Penn Station at 2:17,
3:15 and 4:15 am have coordinated SEPTA
connections at Trenton
Leaving Atlantic City
NJT Train 4500 will depart Atlantic
City at 1:29 a.m. and make all stops to Cherry Hill, where it will
arrive at 2:31 a.m. Connecting PATCO service to Philadelphia is available at NJ
TRANSIT’s Lindenwold Station.

Ski Shuttles
While I'm on a transit kick here, there are
ski buses and trains available from New York to resorts in NJ
the Catskills and Vermont
Daytrips
The Spring Mountain Ski Area is
located directly on the Perkiomen Trail and is accessible by bike when the trail
is clear and dry.
Mountain Creek www.mountaincreek.com
This early departure requires taking Amtrak train
190 which departs 30th St at 5:14 am and arrives at Penn Station 6:40. The
Port Authority is one subway stop north of Penn Station.hia
On weekends and holidays (including New Year’s Day,
Jan 2, Martin Luther King Day & Presidents’ Day), the bus will leave Port
Authority Bus Terminal Gate 326 at 7:30 a.m., and reach Mountain Creek at
approximately 9:12 a.m., allowing for a full day on the mountain. The bus
departs Mountain Creek at 4:30 p.m., and arrives back at the Port Authority Bus
Terminal at 6:12 p.m.
http://www.njtransit.com/ne_pressrelease.jsp?PRESS_RELEASE_ID=881 Round
trip from NY to the resort is $16.90.
Thunder Ridge http://www.thunderridgeski.com/
or http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/mnr/html/getaways/outbound_thunderridge.htm
This small ski area accessible from
Metro-North Harlem Valley Line and is less than a mile from the Patterson Train
Station. There is shuttle service that meets the trains but you can bike it
if the roads are clear. From Penn Station take any subway train to the
42nd St stop and transfer to the Grand Central Shuttle or bike down 32nd St and
turn left on Park Ave straight to Grand Central Station. Trains run every two hours from Grand Central, so time your R7
departure accordingly.
You can buy the train/ski package from the ticket
machines at Grand Central or online The cost
is $38.25 and includes lift ticket, round trip train fare from Grand Central and
the shuttle plus a $5 discount on rental equipment.
I would not recommend bringing ski equipment for
the daytrip to except maybe your boots, its not worth the torture. Snowboards
are doable.
Vacations
Adirondack Trailways serve the Catskill resorts of
Hunter, Windham and Bellayre
Note - the earliest bus to Hunter and Windham
leaves the Port Authority at 8:30 am which allows a SEPTA/NJT connection on
Weekdays
Amtrak Ethan Allen Express offers a timed shuttle
from Rutland VT to Killington http://www.thebus.com/amtrak.htm
The friday and sunday trains are conveniently timed
for weekend ski trips http://www.amtrak.com/trains/timetable/p55.pdf
