Completing the streets means routinely accommodating travel by all modes. America Bikes has launched a new campaign called "Complete the Streets for Safer Bicycling and Walking" It is hoped that this phrase will become synonymous with bicycle/pedestrian friendly streets much like the way "Smart Growth" has helped define intelligent development planning.
We can help by working the phrase into our advocacy letters, discussions and testimonies. Sue Knaup of the Thunderhead Alliance had some great icebreaker suggestions: Is this going to be a Complete Street for safer bicycling and walking? We need Complete Streets for safer bicycling and walking in this new development. These bike lanes and sidewalks will Complete the Streets in this neighborhood.
