I've run into the same absurd rule at USAirways. They want a 75$ fee for bikes. I use a plastic hardshell case, and if I tell them it contains "exercise equipment" (TRUE!!!) there is no fee - it just counts a luggage... if I tell them it's a bike then it costs $75.

Go figure out the reasoning on this one!
