A thorough look at the Draft Environmental Impact Statement shows that bicycle facilities are recommended for inclusion as a part of so called "Congestion Mitigation Strategies" (CMS) for US 202. and that the cost of these facilities will be a part of operational improvements. http://146.145.69.72/Pages/es1/SECT3/table3/iii-1.htm (see software requirement below) However the type of bicycle facilities recommended are nowhere to be found. The drawings suggest that there will be at least a shoulder. Drawings are online at http://146.145.69.72/Pages/es1/index.htm where your browser will install the software you need to view the drawings. Three alternatives are being considered for US 202, the main differences will be the exact alignment of the road. There will be 6 lanes (this adds difficulty for bikes to cross 202). Jug handles will be installed in lieu of left turn lanes (this creates right turn conflicts but makes it easier for bikes to turn left). A ring road and an interchange that will be constructed at the road US 1/US 202 intersection, this section looks particularly hazardous for bikes http://146.145.69.72/Pages/es1/SECT4/figure4/IV-4.dwf This ring road needs bike lanes for local access and to give cyclists an alternative to crossing the on-off ramps. In addition there will be pedestrian bridges at 3 major intersections. So here is what we need to do to make sure that bike facilities are constructed and well designed Talking Points 1 - Continuous shoulders or bike lanes along the entire stretch along US 202 measuring at least 8 feet 3 - Minimalizing conflict points such as commercial driveways, right turn lanes and on/off ramps which are hazardous for bikes. 3 - Consideration for bicycles turning left off US 202 4 - Consideration for bicycles crossing US 202 at intersections Send your comments in writing by April 9th to PennDOT, 7000 Geerdes Boulevard, King of Prussia, PA 19406, Attn: Elaine Elbich, P.E. I hope to have a sample letter and printable envelope template available on the BCGP website later this week.
