Update 6/18/04
4) Bill Introduced to Provide Stable Funding
for Transit
"On Thursday, June 10, 2004 State Senator Stewart J. Greenleaf
introduced Senate Bill #1162 – Stable Funding Source supported by 22
bipartisan co-sponsored from across the state. This bill proposes the passage
of a dedicated funding package for public transit in the Commonwealth. On
Monday, June 14, 2004, Representative John Taylor announced his intent to
introduce House Bill # 2697 that also calls for the creation of long-term
subsidy funding for transit. Both Legislators have expressed optimism that a
dedicated funding bill can be passed before the Legislator recesses for the
summer." For more information

5) Upper Merion Invites
Participation in Open Space Cmte
From Dave Broida, Upper Merion Twp's Park and Rec Director:
"The Board has appointed a new ten-member Open Space Plan Committee, to
update the Master Plan for Recreation and Parks, in anticipation of applying
for the township’s share of the $150 million Montgomery County Bond Issue
for Open Space. Our share is approx. $1.7 million, giving the township 80% or
90% (depending on circumstances) matching funds. So, if you, your organization,
or employer is interested in the work of this committee, please know that the
meetings are open to the public, and that public participation is invited in
the process. Please e-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
to be placed on the e-list (it’s paperless), and we’ll keep you
posted on meetings and also on ways to be involved (field trips, studies,
etc.)"
7) Section of Chester Valley Trail Opens
The section of the Chester Valley Trail from Warner Road to South
Gulph Road in Upper Merion Township opened on Wednesday, June 16th. This
is the first part of the Chester Valley Trail to open in Montgomery County, and
it contains a bike bridge over the Schuylkill Expressway. The Chester
Valley Trail will eventually extend east to Norristown Borough where it will
connect with the existing Schuylkill River Trail and south through Chester
County to Exton. It is expected that the full trail, over 20 miles in
length, will be completed on or before the end of 2007. PennDOT built
this segment of the trail during the interchange work that has just been
completed and are now in an agreement with Montgomery County regarding ownership
and maintenance of the trail.
