July 1, 2004 Alex Doty Acting Executive Director Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia 100 South Broad Street, Suite 1355 Philadelphia, PA 19110 Dear Mr. Doty: Thank you for encouraging your members to write to us expressing
their views reqarding the current Bike on SEPTA policy.
Over the last several weeks, we have^ received over 150 postcards from your members asking
us to allow more bicycles on trains and to develop a bicycle locker
management plan. Please notify your members of the content of this letter, as it
explains our position on these issues. Recently SEPTA began evaluating all Bike on Rail program
information for consistency
We feel it is important for all policies, operating rules, and brochures to say the same thing. SEPTA is implementing a new
website design on July 1 2004 and updated Bike on SEPTA information will be
included. We are also going to produce a new Bike on SEPTA brochure in
the near future. Finally SEPTA'S railroad employee rulebook, the SPO manual,
will be revised to reflect the changes. As a result of these efforts, all SEPTA
information regarding Bike on Rail will be consistent. At this time the Bike on Rail policy will remain as is - two
(2) bicycles per train during off-peak hours, and five (5) bicycles per train on
weekends and major holidays Independence Day has been added to the list of
major holidays, which also includes New Years Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day,
Thanksgiving, and Christmas We
will, however, continue to discuss ways to better serve the bicycling community. We have also emphasized that folding
bicycles can be taken on the Regional Rail, Broad Street Subway,
Market-Frankford Subway Elevated, and Norristown High Speed Line systems at all
times, as long as they are in the folded position. You are already aware of SEPTA'S policy regarding bicycle
lockers, in that we will not install any new lockers at rail stations due to
security concerns. We will investigate the current rental procedures of our existing
bike lockers and determine what actions to take at a later date. Thank you for your interest in SEPTA. Sincerely Pasquale T. Deon Sr. Chairman SEPTA Board |
