Actually, George Romney (Mitt Romney's dad, I think) was Chairman of American Motors before he was Governor of Michigan. His distinction as an auto executive was that he promoted compact cars in the middle of the Tailfin Era:
"As chairman and president of American Motors from 1954 until 1962, Mr. Romney played a key role in bringing the compact economy car to the U.S. public. He oversaw marketing for the Rambler, which he promoted with a missionary enthusiasm. Lambasting the large chromium-laden cars produced by Ford, Chrysler and General Motors then, he declared: 'Who wants to have a gas-guzzling dinosaur in his garage? . . . Think of the gas bills!'" Romney (of MA) is a descendent of George Romney, who was governor of Michigan in the '50s/'60s. Dunno how much of a shill for the auto industry the elder Romney was, but most MI politicians are. How ironic his descendent would be booting SUV's and pushing car-sharing. > > > From: bob <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > > > Romney aides moving to curb use of SUVs > > > > Car-sharing push is next > > --------------- > Paul T.
