Research Assistantship Announcement Speech and Signal Processing Laboratory Marquette University Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research Assistantships are currently available for Fall 2004 with The Dr. Dolittle Project (http://speechlab.eece.mu.edu/dolittle ) in the Speech and Signal Processing lab at Marquette University. The fundamental goal of this research project is to develop a broadly useable framework for pattern analysis and classification of animal vocalizations, by integrating successful models and ideas from the field of speech processing and recognition into bioacoustics. Tasks include automatic vocalization classification and labeling, individual identification, call type classification, behavioral vocalization correlations, and studies of language acquisition and seismic infrasonic communication. Species being targeted for study include agricultural animals, marine mammals, and several endangered species, in collaboration with researchers at a number of other institutions. Compensation includes tuition reimbursement as well as a monthly stipend of $1400 per month. Candidates should have a Bachelors or Masters degree in a discipline related to speech and signal processing or bioacoustics. The Speech and Signal Processing lab is associated with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Marquette University, located in Milwaukee, WI. Interested individuals should send a letter to: Dr. Mike Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Marquette University Milwaukee, WI 53201-1881 http://www.eng.mu.edu/johnson (414) 288-0631
