Fact is, folks, there are just as many (if not more) vets against
feeding raw meat diets than there are for it. So, Cecil's vet is not
alone, nor is he wrong in believing there can be significant problems
stemming from raw meat diets. Unlike what you sometimes hear from raw
meat proponents, dogs ARE capable of becoming infected with salmonella
and other bacteria from contaminated raw meat. Not only can dogs be
infected by these organisms, they can also become extremely ill and die
from the bacterial toxins produced. These are the issues that people
against raw meat diets are concerned about.

Can raw meat be safely fed to dogs? Sure, if great care is taken with
the quality and cleanliness of the meat. Do all people who feed raw
meat have access to quality, clean meat? Probably not. Have some dogs
become sickened by raw meat diets? Absolutely, yes. Have some dogs
become sickened by commercial canned diets? Again, yes, referring to
the recent food recall. So, just as with any complex issue, there are
many factors to consider, most of which we haven't scratched the
surface of in this discussion. This isn't the place to do it, but, if
you're interested in feeding a raw meat diet to your dogs, make sure
you do the research necessary to know what you're doing. The yahoo
group Carol suggested may be a good place to start, but I wouldn't stop
there.
