I was kind of surprised, my sheep have been eating saplings and bark
since day 1, and at that time I was doing Protein blocks & free-range
minerals at the same time. I just figured it was what they do.

I did notice that they did it more as the grass and shrubs were all
consumed. Did you mow down your grass this year or do something else
different? Or has your herd size overstepped the carrying capacity?

I'm be really interested if someone has a nutrition answer.

branches, etc "just because", since they are brousers, like goats...as well as
grazers. If this is the first season, I'd lean towards mineral
deficiency...and
put out loose sheep minerals, free choice....They'll eat what they need.

I'd never heard that specifically, but had learned from Amish country that
when the cows were eating the fences/trees to put Apple Cider Vinegar in
the feed (or was it water?). I noticed some of my youngest lambs have a
liking for some old RR ties in the barn and thought about offering some. I
used the unfiltered, undistilled variety. I've run out of minerals, so
that will be the first order of business to replace.

I have found this to very normal action for sheep. They have eradicated all
of the cedars, of which they were brought into the country to do. Plus they
will work other trees as well. We have had to fence trees that we do not
want destroyed.

Does anyone know what mineral (or?) might be lacking in diet that causes
the
ABB sheep to eat the bark off oak trees? This is the first season they
have
done this. At first we thought they were just going after the thick tree
moss that grows this time of year, then we see the outer bark gone done to
the
base. I've heard horses chew wood if they lack certain minerals in their
diet. Could this be the cause for sheep, too?

Thanks for any/all input available,

Good Morning,
I've been told that sheep in general are missing minerals if they eat
bark....but which specific mineral, I don't know. I look forward to reading
the other responses. I've also been told that hair sheep tend to eat bark,
branches, etc "just because", since they are brousers, like goats...as well
as grazers. If this is the first season, I'd lean towards mineral
deficiency...and put out loose sheep minerals, free choice....They'll eat
what they need.

All your feedback and suggestions on the "tree-eating" BB sheep is much
appreciated. To answer a couple of questions posed: no, we did nothing
different
this year, actually it is still early in the pasture grass/weed growing
season and if anything, there is more than plenty to eat; We have a small
flock
of sheep and have not over-grazed or added to the sheep population; yes we
offer free-option sheep minerals and suppliment with hay in summer when
pasture
grazing diminishes. So as a last option we've bought a huge roll of chicken
wire to protect the trees we don't want killed.

On a humorous note, I hate thistle in my pasture because it spreads so fast.
The sheep won't eat it so I go out with a hoe to the small outbreaks I find
in Spring. (Hey it's a small pasture) Yesterday as I finished a big pile, I
glanced behind me to find the sheep happily following along eating away at
the chopped thistle. Go figure - they wanted it cut up for them LOL
