Annette,

If you want to keep this ram as your flock sire, then you will need to make some bachelor quarters for him and the 3-month-old ram lamb.

Although a lot of people let their ram run with the ewes all the time, my preference is to only put the ram in with the ewes when I want them bred. He stays with them for 35 days, which takes them through two estrous cycles. Then I pull him out. 152 days after I put the ram in with the ewes, I can begin watching for lambs, and I only need to wait for 35 more days before I know they are all done lambing. When I wean, all of the ram lambs go into the bachelor quarters where they learn, without being injured, that my main ram is top dog.

Learn from this mistake; never make a friend out of your ram because he will not fear you. When they fear you, they are more inclined to keep their distance from you. And never scratch a ram on his head.

Carol
