Re: [blackbelly] Nice friendly rams

This story very much reminds me of a young ram I had, hit me in the side of the head through a fence, when I was bent over repairing a hole in the fence on the out side of the pasture. Knocked me cold. The only thing that saved me was he hit a post first and glanced off slightly and I was already moving back when I caught that instant glimpse of him, and my stockdog hit me from behind trying to get between. So he didn't hit me full force straight on. I never saw him coming or heard him, he was clear across the pasture when I saw him a few minutes earlier. I was really lucky, the next day he was not. I took him straight to auction. So not only be cautious "in" the pasture, but anywhere that he can get you through something too. I at least always take a stockdog with me if I enter the pasture with the ram.

Rams are a ball of instinct and if you don't believe that you will when you suddenly find your self lying on your back with that nice friendly ram looking down into your face. Rams do not see you as a different species. When your in their pasture you are the competition and when you are walking around looking at the ewes in their territory they see you as a threat and you need to be put in your place. A woman I know told me how her grandmother was killed by a ram. When she bent over while doing her chores the ram hit her head on, killing her instantly. I've been knocked down several times by rams when I turned my back on them and it happens so fast you don't know what happened. Lesson learned. Never, never trust any ram. They are not dogs, cats or goats. All rams have the potential to be bad, just like bulls. Stay out of their pasture and do not handle them unless it is necessary. And never take your eye's off them.

"He is my other eyes that can see above the clouds; my other ears that hear above the winds. He is the part of me that can reach out into the sea. He has told me a thousand times over that I am his reason for being; by the way he rests against my leg; by the way he thumps his tail at my smallest smile; by the way he shows his hurt when I leave without taking him. (I think it makes him sick with worry when he is not along to care for me.) When I am wrong, he is delighted to forgive. When I am angry, he clowns to make me smile. When I am happy, he is joy unbounded. When I am a fool, he ignores it. When I succeed, he brags. Without him, I am only another man. With him, I am all-powerful. He is loyalty itself. He has taught me the meaning of devotion. With him, I know a secret comfort and a private peace. He has brought me understanding where before I was ignorant. His head on my knee can heal my human hurts. His presence by my side is protection against my fears of dark and unknown things. He has promised to wait for me... whenever... wherever - in case I need him. And I expect I will - as I always have. He is just my dog." - Gene Hill
