Carr:
I'm not sure where Meridian Tx. is, I don't have a map
handy, but I'll tell you a few things I've learned
trying to sell my sheep. Here on the boarder of
Oklahoma and Arkansas, everybody is after the "HORNS".
I've not had any luck selling young rams (6 to 8
months)in the fall of the year. But, last winter I
think it was January or February I went to the sale
and bought two young ewes, both with very good
blackbelly colorings, for $42.00, they were mixed in
with a bunch of rams the same age. The rams brought
about the same amount, then they ran in about 8 to 10
Older Rams with very good horn growth, but pretty
small in stature. They were probably about 1.5 to 2
year old. The sale really got busy then! These guys
went for over $100.00 each. So I went home and rounded
up my 2yr old ram that I wanted to sale anyway. Sold
him two weeks later at the same sale for $95. after
yard commission and other expenses. He had good horns
but not an excellent spread, they were a little close
to his head. So,I'm trying to hang on to my rams until
their horns turn out and see If I can't get a little
more from them. Or at least make myself think I am. I
did sell all of my yearling ewes out the door last
year and did alright with that. I haven't sold to the
meat market, but just as some of the others have said,
if you can get a base of buyers coming to your
door, that's where you can really profit. I work with a
man who raises dorper. He has a register Ram, but just
run of the mill ewes. He sales every on of his lambs
before the year is out for $100. apiece. He says the
people come out catch the lambs and haul them off, all
he does is tell them which ones, watches the rodeo,
and counts the money as they drive away. One last
thing Carr, all the auctions I go to they sale the
small animals (sheep, goats, small pigs) by the head,
not by the pound. Hope this gives you some differ ant
ideas to sale by.
