We have very recently discovered a new treat that our sheep just love. . . . .Prickly Pear cactus apples! There were a few large clumps of the cactus in the sheep's pen and we noticed that the apples had disappeared. We didn't see any of the sheep eating any of the apples, though some of the sheep had a few cactus thorns stuck in their faces around their mouths. When we were digging up some of the larger clumps on our property, we decided to see if the sheep would eat any of the cactus apples. Once they figured out what the new treat was, they couldn't run to us fast enough to get some of these tasty snacks! Now when they see me or my husband going to a clump of cactus to collect a bucket of apples, they start baaaaing right away and they all make a beeline for us when we begin to approach their fence, almost pushing each other out of the way so they can be first in line. I didn't know if anyone else had shared these "free" snacks with their sheep or not, but though I would share our experiences.
