>From what I understand about the Federal program is that the tags will all carry a chip that can be read by equipment when the stock enter the auction barns or feed lots or slaughter houses. Don't you know that this will be a huge expense. According to the large producers though, it will be a time saver for them since they will not have to lay hands on the animal to extract their number and herd name. There are already computer programs out there in the private sector and they are running $400 to $500 and doesn't include the computer or the device that reads the 15 digit number. The cattle industry is already using some of the technology but the Feds intend for all animal groups (sheep, horses, swine, chickens, etc) to be including in the tagging process. The little details are all that are left to be worked out. Good luck to all the small animal holders!! I think that we will be the ones that will lose!!
