Maybe it doesn't exist because you have a hardware problem? Did you 
already used it under another "official" Gnu/Linux system?

May I invite you to put 
lp
into /etc/modules
and reboot.
On my blindia:~# system I see clearly lpd been started between all 
starting processes.

I can not urge enough to install CUPS, even if you're using a single 
local printer; i don't remember if lp0 was a symlink or a file / map: 
write to me off-list and I will help you with installing and configuring 
cups, I did it again a few weeks ago when we bought a new Brother HL2040 
laserprinter.

BTW, CUPS can manage more printers at the same time.

I will test again with adding cups on the fresh grml/blindia system, and 
tell you then if it had worked here.
