If you can, take a scanner with you and sit where you can see the pits.
There's usually someone with all the channels somewhere around the entrance
gate, if not scan.... :-). You can listen in on the pit communications of
your favorite team and on race control. I though it was pretty cool.
You'll know who's misbehaving on the track and what flags have been called,
also you can hear all the swearing going on when the drivers really screw
up.

This is what you hear from race control:
"Tracy just ran over his crew member. He's done. Black flag him."

and about one of the rookie drivers:

"What's he still doing on the track?"
"He's not responding to the flags"
"Have the race marshall have a talk with him, after that we'll talk to him
some more."

Then on TV you hear some watered down version from the announcers.

LBGP is April 5-8.

Grandstand 5 is cool because you sit at the end of the high speed straight in clear
view of three big turns. I already have tickets.

Phone numbers for tickets are 562-436-9953, or toll free 888-82-SPEED.

My E36/4 makes terrible creaking and groaning noises from the rubber
door seals. I've tried spraying them with silicone but the sound doesn't go
away so I'm considering giving them a liberal coating of Vasoline as I
'think' it might fix the problem. Anyone think this petroleum based product
will hurt the rubber seals in any way? Other ideas on how to make the
creaking stop every time my car twists or hits a big bump?

TIA,
Rob

sounds like a pretty blatant case of theft of someone else's work. I
know that there was a schism between Racing Dynamics in Italy &
someone using their name here in the US, but it was always my
recollection that the US folks were the under-handed ones. if this is
the way the European side does business then I guess both sides are
equally dis-honest.

Kerosene? Not on my bushings. Kerosene leaves an oily film. Soap
evaporates better. Not 100% liquid detergent from the bottle, more like
something you would wash the car with, mostly water, just a little soap.

Yes. Had Powell gone to O'fest he would have seen it.

No, see above. It is my 2002 that has 20,000 miles on it.

The M3 respects me and I respect it. After 30 years of servicing BMWs (no
more) I've learned a thing or two I hope.

BMW rubber care dude. Gummi-phlege or however it's spelled, that's what
BMW recommends and it'll keep your doors from freezing as well (not the
locks of course).

Dave,
The bellhousings look to be the same shape. although the 750il is pictured
as an automatic in the ETK. The bolts are different with torx bolts on the
v12 and hex bolts on the 535i. Also they are of different lengths. They
seem to be located in the same place on both bellhousings. According to my
local BMW dealer shop manager, a knowledgeable tech, the big car engines
after 1984 will bolt up to the various transmissions. I have ordered one
bolt of each size so i can match up to some threaded rod from the local
fastener shop. I have each of these motors ready to go on an engine stand.
Need long bolts for my stands, hence the rods/nuts instead of bolts.

I'm just jealous you have a great car. I would love to go to O'Fest.
Unfortunately I can't really take the 2 weeks off to get there and back in my
car from San Diego. And I'll be damned if I'll show up at an O'Fest in a
Taurus.

When they have the next one at Denver, Dallas or points west, I'll be there.

Not a Taurus! The hot rental for O'fest is a Grand Am GT (rebadged as a
340bs for the week). Ask Tammi or Bassett about the lunch run. :) I wanted
to take it out at Road Atlanta; then I saw turn 12...

Some relevant passages from McLaren's propaganda:

"Paul (Rosche) then told Gordon (Murray) that his Motorsport people
were improving BMW's flagship production 5-litre V12, perfecting
48-valve heads to be fitted to it."

"On October 25, 1990, Gordon visited Munich. The hopped-up
production V12 would not do: 'Too big and heavy. Definitely not for
us. Then Paul asked 'What do you really want?', so I told him: big
displacement in the smallest possible overall package-size --
absolutely no more than 600mm long -- revving to around seven-five --
550-plus bhp -- maximum weight 250kg -- rigid enough to work as a
load-bearing structural member -- dry-sump lubrication to minimise
overall height and avoid surge in high-G cornering.

And Paul simply said 'We'll do a new engine.'"

"The S70/2 engine was derived directly from BMW production practise,
inheriting many features proved in the 6-cylinder power unit for
their M5 high-performance saloon. Both the minimum-size new
dedicated cylinder block and heads were cast in aluminium, the
cylinder bores Nicasil-coated for wear resistance. Con-rods and
crankshaft were to be forged and twisted steel, lightweight
shallow-skirted pistons in forged aluminium, and the exhaust valves
sodium-cooled. No resort was made to exotic titanium valves or
con-rods."

"While the S70/2's twin-overhead camshaft and 4-valve per cylinder
valvetrain technology was shared with the high-performance M3, the
distantly related engines were tuned to significantly different
torque characteristics."

[Nicasil blocks?! I wonder if these engines have sulphur-related problems]

> I would expect BMW to base the V-12 on the M20, if only in
> a few basic areas such as bore centers. Yes? No?

Long ago, I vaguely recall reading an article the said that the
majority, if not all BMW engines share the same bore centers to ease
manufacturing. Apparently, this allows the same machine tool to work
on the blocks for all the engines.

Clean sheets? All new? I guess it depends on your own
interpretation of what each term means. How many of you believe that
the M54/S54 are "all new?"

I just bought that BMW Car yesterday because it had an

on Hartge cars with most cars they've done represented
it seems. I skimmed that part, I'm afraid as I never
followed Hartge that closely.

OEM ball joints are available seperately, about 18.00 each, I agree that
replacing the arm is much easier, but they are available ( I have them
