Alas that only fixes one failure mode. The Nady headphone leads are so !@#*
flimsy that they have very little mechanical strength. As students pull them
out of their helmets by the leads, you develop internal breaks in the
conductors at random locations.

The full solution is to buy a heavier gauge headphone extension cord
(Target, Radio Shack), cut off the socket end, and solder it into the Nady
headphone. Unfortunately this is hard to do, and you need to work under a
magnifying glass. Well, at my age I need to...

Truth is the Nady communicator is a godawful POS. But at least it's a cheap
POS. I haven't found a better solution at anything approaching a reasonable
cost.

It's also not much known that you can buy replacement Nady headphones by
themselves for under $25, see:

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com

I solved my half of the problem by entirely disassembling a Nady headset and
building its parts into my helmet.

> now, if only I knew a way to make them LOUDER I'd be all set.

Never been a problem for me.

I know there are kits of di's sold specifically for
porting & polishing purposes. I need to match a set
of throttle bodies to their mating surface.

correct, Neil. They had failed to even open the coolant container.

Don't you mean the std green stuff is more caustic?

This service advisor and I go back a few years (and having 3 BMWs I do
see him often...) and he knows quite well I've given him 5s on occasions
the service didn't quite merit it but I knew it wasn't his fault. Email
is emotionless, and reading back what I wrote it might appear that I was
hastier in writing than I was in person. It was more of a "I can let
little things slide, but this is beyond the line" kind of tone, not a
FIX THIS NOW OR I'M YELLING AT THE MANAGER kind of tone. I don't
function that way. I *like* getting loaner cars when I really need them.

You just need older students like me.
I used a Chatterbox and liked it. It was louder than the Nady.

Pat -

Error Code 1222 is described in Bentley as "Oxygen sensor lean/rich control
stop". The normal O2S failure code is 1221, and is set, as I understand it,
as a consequence of the O2S signal not switching from rich to lean to rich
etc. frequently enough - which is how they fail (OK, that is how mine failed
:-)).

You, on the other hand, seem to have a perfectly operational O2S. Your
problem is that your computer has lost control of the mixture. You should
put a volt meter on the O2S signal and go for a drive. Given your loss of
mileage, your O2S signal will probably be 0.1v or lower, a lean signal.
That would cause the computer to correct full rich and mileage to drop.

Possible cause: a leak in the exhaust system allowing oxygen to enter ahead
of the O2S. Other possible cause: a misfire, which sends unburned oxygen
down the exhaust. Etc.

As a point of technical trivia, I believe you will find that the temperature
sensor that drives your gauge is not the same sensor that feeds your
computer.
