But a generic OBD II reader won't reset the dash lights on a BMW. I also
believe that only certain versions of Motronic will reveal their codes
with the stomp method. My 93 740 will not, for instance.

The Peake and the generic all suffer from the hidden BMW (or name brand
of your choice) progamming. They all have had to be reverse engineered
so miss stuff.

A couple of weeks ago I started setting a CEL in my 00 M5. Read it and
reset it a couple of times, a couple of times it reset itself. Every
time I read it with the Peake I got 3 codes - "Exhaust camshaft position
sensor 1-4", "Exhaust camshaft position sensor 5-8" and Exhaust camshaft
VANOS position control 5-8".

I knew there had to be only one fault and the rest were secondary. I
took the car to my current favorite shop (European Performance) and
their much more sophisticated and expensive equipment said "Exhaust cam
position sensor bank 1". Replaced that sensor and all is well with the
world.

But for what it does tell me and the ability to reset the lights it was
worth the $125 I paid for it.(used)

I have used McNutt Auto Transport 3 times with good results. In my
case they were open transports. From WI to TN and TN to MO was around
$425 each, CT to TN was around $600. They charge by the mile, but once loaded
up a longer trip does not cost that much more. I would guess 300 miles would
be $300? I did get the frequent customer discount last time :-)

http://www.carmoving.com/mcnutt/

There are a ton of car movers - enclosed and open haulers, but McNutt is
the only one I have personal experience with. The price is right because
there is no set pickup or delivery date - if you can live with that you
can save some money.

The Peake reader won't read ABS codes for sure... I've tried it and called
Peake (prior to buying the tool) and was told it probably wouldn't.

I ended up getting the "full" tool anyway, just because it pretty much
only will take one problem to justify the extra $100 or whatever.

YMMV of course. I do think that the usefulness is more limited on the
ODBI cars like mine since the flash codes can also point you in the right
direction.

Still, I bought the full tool, so you know where I come down on the
decision! :-)

AutoSpies had a really comprehensive five part report on the technical
details of the new M5. It took over half an hour to read all of it as
it was pretty well done with good (not great) detail. I suppose the
8,250 RPM redline is among the most impressive features.

BMW NA had the new M5 flown to O'Fest for display. Very cool of them to
do that.

One of my friends and GGC Chapter member won the raffle for a ride with
Bill Auberlin in the F1 McLaren. That's WAY cooler than gawking at an
M5 IMHO. I'd give most anything for that ride!!!

Cheers

seems overly simple, but how about paying a friend to
follow you & just drive to/from the buyer ?

gas for the 900 miles seems like it would be
much cheaper than paying a company to ship
the car & much, much less hassle.

No one I know, am endorsing, am commissioned to, etc. Just passing on
helpful info on an M20 diesel crank (the ones everyone looks for) for sale
on ebay.de. You can find this on ebay.com with auction #7909504981.

Shipping costs in Germany are 35 Euro, he lists willing to send around
Europe -- he may be willing to send further.

Good luck !!

Oh yeah! The drifting was a sellout. I had to discourage a bunch of
people from doing it but they keep coming back for more tickets. It was
a life altering experience. Even if they just rode shotgun with
Thacket, people were coming out with grins on their faces for hours. As
far as the McLaren is concerned, one of our San Diego guys won in the
raffle and rode with Boris driving. I took pictures. That thing was
loud my ears were dripping afterwards. He said they were doing the
chekane at 140 and the straightaways at 170. I was so jealous.

Taking pictures was good enough for me. I got real close I even got to
touch and close the door!!! I'm not washing my hands for a week! That
was so cool.

Cool! Thanks for the report. Dan Tackett's driving can make anyone smile
even if it's just in a parking lot. For others' reference, a Z06 Corvette
with R compounds would hit about 130 MPH on the straights (the banked
oval) at California Speedway, and maybe 100 MPH in the chicane (my humble
E46 328Ci with street tires does about maybe 115 on the oval, if I get out
and pushed, and 90 out of the chicane). But I read elsewhere that Boris
wasn't driving the car that hard because he said its tires weren't right
for the track, and he had passengers.

A possible solution is forming:

1) Only allow paid-for cars.
2) Manual trans only
3) ?

This just brings added excitement to being behind one of these at the
track--you have to develop your skills for avoiding crankcase parts & oil in
the track.

After some financial discussions on the home front, I have decided to
downsize my car expenditures. This means selling the M3. It is cosmos
black with grey interior, luxury package with heated seats and CD
changer. Stock other than the shark injector, redline fluids, and UUC
tranny mounts and enforcers. Everything works, nothing leaks out, no
dings, a few chips, recent maintenance. 110k miles, in Kansas City,
$16000 negotiable.

I would also be willing to trade for a 1990 or so 5spd Bimmer with
similar miles and something around $10k depending on the car.

It is time for the annual summer drive from mid-Tenn to Seattle in
search of summer coolth and to haul several sets of BMW wheels .
Having 'done' several different routes we are pondering the
possibilities of heading 'up north' to Chicago to visit some of the
supposedly outstanding museums in that area then pick up I90 and just
burn westward ...
So the question before the house is ....is Chicago worth the effort ?
Are the museums really all that special or just over-hyped ? How
convenient is it (and where to stay ??) to stay overnight 'in the
'burbs' and take public transport (the famous Ell ?) into town ?
