If they are IDE drives, I've also run into the problem and have had  
success experimenting with jumper and connection settings. For  
example, sometimes I have had to put the drive on an IDE channel all  
by itself and/or set the jumpers to cable select instead of master  
(and sometimes the other way around).

I would also check your BIOS to see if the drives are being detected.  
If they are not, then I suspect the hardware is having problems  
detecting the drives rather than the OS. But if they show in the BIOS,  
and IDE and jumper settings are not the issue, then I would also try  
using System Rescue CD.

PS: On these defective disks I have had excellent success with
getdataback
to get the files off, but of course getdata back doesnt do images.
