problem booting from USB

Hi folks,

If I install grub on a USB stick and reboot, then grub is loaded from
USB, as expected. But menu.lst is _not_ found. I just get the command
prompt. Running

        find /boot/grub/stage1

in this session I get

        (hd1,2)

i.e. the regular boot partition. (hd0,0) is missing (even though the
LED flashed very short). AFAIK this is not supposed to happen.

Any idea about what goes wrong here? Can I help to track this down?
