Week in Revew for Sept. 6

The big news last week was a slew of new products from
Microsoft including a new version of Windows Media Player,
the first Portable Media Centers, and a preview of its new
MSN Music service. See our full coverage at
http://www.pcmag.com/category2/0,1738,1385889,00.asp.

These are important because they set up some real
differences between the MS world and the iPod world
for music. But I was intrigued to note that when I went
looking for music, I found very little actual different in
what was available.

The other big news came from AMD, which publicly showed off
its first dual-core processor
(http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1641063,00.asp
kc=ETRSS02129TX1K0000532),
giving it at least a little bragging rights in the race against Intel.
Intel's own announcements are slated for this week's IDF
show(http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1642632,00.asp)

Finally, our thoughts are with everyone in the path of the
storm in Florida. State officials said they are bracing for
the impact
(http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1642888,00.asp),
and do expect to use IT to speed emergency operations.

And here's more from the Ziff Davis websites and publications:

_________PC Magazine______________________________
PORTABLE MEDIA CENTERS CHANGE EVERYTHING

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1641714,00.asp

They handle music, video, television, and photos, and
signal a seismic shift in the way we consume media.
PC Magazine has hands-on reviews of the new, key players.
And check out my personal experience with them:

_________ExtremeTech______________________________
ATI REVEALS NEW 3D GRAPHICS CONTROL SOFTWARE

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1642413,00.asp

ATI's new control application makes 3D features easier to
adjust and understand. ExtremeTech's slideshow reveals
its features.

INTEL TO REDEFINE PERFORMANCE AT IDF

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1642632,00.asp

Intel co-founder Gordon Moore's famous law will be
re-examined again next week, as Intel shifts away from
pure speed to the more efficient utilitzation of silicon.

_________eWEEK____________________________________
SENDER ID WARS HEAT UP

http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1642385,00.asp

Microsoft says it won't require anyone to sign a license
with the company to implement the Sender ID specification
- - a move that some in the open-source community call a
"victory" but others say doesn't indicate compatibility
with open-source licenses. eWEEK takes a look.

LONGHORN'S DEMISE GIVES LINUX ITS CHANCE

http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1642464,00.asp

Linux vendors believe Longhorn's transformation into
"Shorthorn" gives them a shot at making Linux an important
desktop player.

_________Microsoft Watch__________________________
MORE LONGHORN AFTERSHOCKS HIT DEVELOPERS

http://www.microsoft-watch.com/article2/0,1995,1641922,00.asp

The after effects of Microsoft's decision to cut WinFS from
Longhorn are slowly coming to light. It turns out that the
Microsoft Business Framework (MBF), a layer of developer
tools and software classes designed to build on the .Net
Framework, is one casualty. As is the case with WinFS,
there is no official ETA for MBF, at least for now. Read
about it with Microsoft Watch.

must learn how to counter threats to their networks from
increasingly computer-savvy students. See the story
with Baseline.

_________Sync_____________________________________
THE PAST PERFECTED

http://www.syncmag.com/article2/0,1759,1633947,00.asp

Everything old is new again as retro tech gets a modern
update. It's more than meets the eye. Check it out
with Sync.

_________1UP______________________________________
TOP TEN WORST ACCLAIM GAMES

http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3134385

Farewell to these, says 1UP.com. And five good ones, just
to be fair.
