This is either going to elicit a lot of conflicting responses or
none. Anyway, my 2 cents.

Every one has their own preference. So, someone cannot recommend what
will be good for you. They can recommend what is good for them. Having
said that, if this is the first time you are going to try your hands
on Linux, try a Live CD. The Ubuntu live CD should be a good
start. Most of the magazines carry these CD's regularly, or ask around
and you should be able to get from someone. Play with it familiarise
your way around and then go ahead and install it. 

Any my recommendation would be either Fedora or Ubuntu since they seem
to be the most commonly used among people I know.
