                  Part-time Weekend Support Position
                Berkeley Center for Structural Biology

BACKGROUND

The Berkeley Center for Structural Biology (BCSB) maintains and operates 
five protein crystallography beamlines at the Advanced Light Source at 
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Protein crystallography is a 
critical tool for structural biology research; the beamlines are used by 
pharmaceutical companies in the development of therapeutics, and they 
provide vital information to scientists in a diverse range of fields 
from cancer research to cell development.

The beamlines run continuously six days a week, Tuesday through Sunday. 
Scientists, students and post-docs from around the world conduct 
experiments on the beamlines, generally in 24-hour or 48-hour shifts. 
The BCSB supports these users in beamline operation.

DUTIES

Provide technical support for beamline operations during weekend hours. 
Be available to users to answer questions about beamline operation. 
Troubleshoot and document beamline issues. Occasionally participate in 
engineering projects.

This position can either be a 20% or 40% part-time, exempt-level 
position working either 8 hours (one day) or 16 hours (two days) on the 
weekend.

Training will be provided, and will occur during the first three months 
of employment during regular weekday hours.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required -- Bachelors degree in physics or engineering, or equivalent 
professional experience. Excellent interpersonal skills. Strong written 
communications skills. Ability to work independently.

Marginal -- customer support experience, engineering experience, 
familiarity with unix.
