Years ago, I understand, the FBI's NYC office had agents commuting from Philadelphia, which I understand to be somewhat over 50 miles distant...

    I just discovered that the Administrative Office of the US Courts
    and some parts of the executive branch refuse to even consider job
    applications from persons living more than commuting distance
    (roughly 50 miles) from the job location at the time of the
    application. My immediate response is that this is a violation of
    the Constitution because it limits the right to relocate, uses an
    irrational category, and -- perhaps most basically - discriminates
    against residents/citizens of specific states.    I would greatly
    appreciate others' thoughts on this, including, identification of
    the best legal authority for the position.
