SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) An American Indian delegation says the Smithsonian Institution will not turn over the preserved brain of Ishi, California's most famous American Indian, to local tribes. The Indians hoped to bury the brain in Tehema County, where Ishi's now-extinct tribe once lived. But the Smithsonian says it can only hand over the remains to tribes or individuals directly from or culturally affiliated with the deceased. Ishi was the last member of a tribe of Indians who were wiped out by California bounty hunters and disease around the turn of the century.
