Louie Guerrero, 11 years old at the time, was the first  witness as the trial began. He said after teachers complained he had been  "goofing off" during Bible studies, pastor Joshua Thompson took him to  Caleb Thompson's home where he was beaten with a branch from a tree in the yard."

Oakland  over abuse claims 12/7/03 AP "After being hit this year with several lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct by priests, the Diocese of Oakland has filed suit against its insurance company for refusing to pay for judgements and settlements in those cases. The diocese claims that OneBeacon, formerly known as Employer's Commercial Union Insurance Co., has ignored claims submitted involving five abuse cases from the 1970s. According to the lawsuit, the policy is supposed to cover bodily injury caused by negligent acts of a bishop." http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/news/archive/2003/12/07/state2032EST0073.DTL

from L Moss Sharman - Run of Abuse Claims Seen - Those who say they were molested by priests face a year-end deadline for filing legal actions. Settlement talks are continuing. By Jean Guccione and William Lobdell 12/8/03 "With a year-end deadline approaching, those who say they were abused long ago by Roman Catholic priests are expected to file an avalanche of injury claims that could once again rivet attention on the church scandal after months of negotiations in secret....Over the last year, public attention in Southern California has focused on the short-lived criminal prosecution of more than a dozen present and former clerics, including one whom police plucked dramatically off a cruise ship in Alaska. But since a U.S. Supreme Court ruling threw those criminal cases out of court, victims have been turning to the civil courts. Across the country, settlements have been accelerating. The Archdiocese of Chicago agreed in October to pay $12 million to 19 people who said they were abused by priests. The Kentucky Diocese of Covington pledged $5.2 million to 27 alleged victims. The Louisville, Ky., Archdiocese said in June it would pay $25.7 million to nearly 250 alleged victims. And the Diocese of Manchester, N.H., reached a  $6.5-million settlement with 61 alleged victims. But experts widely expect any settlements in California to dwarf others, even those in Boston, where the scandal broke. The Boston Archdiocese agreed in October to pay $85 million to 552 victims. Beverly Hills attorney Raymond P. Boucher, lead counsel for the plaintiffs in the Southern California cases, estimates that more than 500 claims will be filed statewide before the end of the year. "Los Angeles is unique," Boucher said. "The enormous number of children who were sodomized and raped and victimized by priests is greater than in any other archdiocese anywhere else in the country."  The California plaintiffs enjoy significant legal advantages over the Boston claimants, according to Stockton attorney Larry Drivon, who, with Boucher, represents about 300 clients in Southern California." http://www.latimes.com

Defendant part of big cannibal scene 12/9/03 "The detective who investigated Germany's infamous cannibal case told a court yesterday that he had stumbled upon a vast cannibal scene in Germany -- involving several dentists and other professionals. Giving evidence in the trial of Armin Meiwes, the 42-year-old computer expert who killed and ate another man, federal investigator Wilfried Fehl yesterday said the gruesome case was not an isolated one. His officers had discovered a flourishing cannibal scene in Germany, he said, involving middle-class professionals, as well as manual workers. "We are talking about dentists, teachers, cooks, government officials and handymen," he told the court, during the second day of Meiwes' trial for murder. He added: "These are people who come from the middle reaches of society." http://www.mg.co.za/Content/l3.asp?ao=28305
