SO --- YOU PEOPLE THOUGHT I WAS KIDDING, HUH?

Well ... You're wrong.

You are right to doubt though. As I say, don't believe anything
you hear on my program or read on my site unless it is consistent
with what you already know to be true, or you have verified the
information with other reputable sources.

Now, what are we talking about? Do you remember those storm
troopers that grabbed Elian in Miami? Well, we have an innocuous
little law working its way through the Congress that would make
it easier for Janet Reno to send those same people into your
home, conduct a search, seize or copy things such as your papers,
photos, computer disks and hard drives, and then leave.

Would they have to leave a copy of the search warrant as they do
now?

Nope.

Would they still have to leave an inventory of what they copied
or took?

Nope.

Would they still have to even notify you that they were there and
conducted the search?

Well ... yes. But not until months later.

Is this another one of those Democrat intrusions into our privacy
and rights?

Actually, no. It's Republican. The culprit is none other than
Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah.

It's all part of the absurd war on drugs. It's part of something
called the Methamphetamine Anti-Proliferation act. The purpose is
to make it easier for federal agents to bust the meth labs out
there ... but the law can be used for any other federal
enforcement activity. Searching for evidence of tax evasion.
Taking a peek to see what kind of guns you have around the house.
You name it.

Day after day politicians figure out different and innovative
ways to infringe on our privacy and chip away at our
Constitutional rights --- and, more often than not, they use the
war on drugs as their excuse.

So, here's the scenario under Hatch's nifty little law. The IRS
suspects you of not disclosing all of your income. The BATF
wonders just how many guns you own. The DEA thinks you might be
smoking a little chronic after a hard days work. So --- they use
this law to get a warrant. They enter your home while you're
away. They make copies of any papers or pictures they're
interested in. They take pictures. They copy your computer disks.
They make a copy of your hard drive. They note what types of
books you read, videos you watch, and magazines you subscribe to.
Then they leave. When you get home you have no idea they've been
there. No warrant. No notes. No thank you letter. No inventory of
items taken or copied. No nothing. Federal agents have been
crawling around your private home and you aren't even told. Not
then, anyway. Finally, four, five, six months from now you
receive a letter from the FBI, the BATF, the DEA or some other
federal agency saying something like "Oh, yeah ... we meant to
tell you that we were in your house about five months ago and we
copied all your files. Have a nice day."

But --- as the average year-2000 American would say; "Well, if
you aren't doing anything wrong you don't have anything to worry
about."

Any person who utters those words ought to have their voting
privileges revoked.
