The Blairites 10 Commandments
Relentless beatings from the savage press over the last few weeks has finally
forced Tony Blair to yank his chief spinmaster out of the headlights and back
into the darkness.
After being heckled by 10,000 middle-aged women last week for a political
speech he cribbed from Bill Clinton's playbook, Blair declared "war on spin"
and has promised to "get back in touch" with the people.
Unconvinced, the tabloids have jumped on Blair's move to force Spinner No 1,
Alastair Campbell, into a less "public role."
All that means, the tabloids cry, is that Campbell will no longer be talking to
the hacks on a daily basis. And addressing his government's "over-spinning" in
such a public way is a sort of spin itself. Isn't it?
Now that Campbell has become the Gollum of Westminster, the Daily Express has
stepped into the breach with a two-page spread mocking what surely must be -
based on the evidence - Tony Blair's 10 Commandments. Sort of PR tablets of
stone carved by the hand of his spin God for the Blairites to follow if they
are to find their way out of the political wilderness and into a second term.

In short, it reads a bit like the scorched-earth policy employed by the
Clintonites - who have already achieved the salvation of a second term - which
is exactly where the Blairites would like to be.
