WASHINGTON - Republican elector Joe Arpaio of Arizona isn't
taking any chances when he goes to vote for George W. Bush for
president today - he's taking his gun.
Arpaio, who's been labeled "America's toughest sheriff," has been
on the receiving end of a heavy lobbying campaign to get him to
switch his vote in today's Electoral College voting.
The Scottsdale sheriff said he's gotten 174 phone calls in recent
days from Gore supporters seeking a defection and Bush supporters
urging him to stay put.
"They think I'm going to change my vote, which I'm not doing," he
told The Post. "I endorsed Bush over my own senator, John
McCain. Why would I go against the senator if I didn't feel
strongly for George W.?"
If Gore supporters can persuade just two of Bush's 171 electors
to vote for Gore or abstain, Bush would fail to get a majority of
the electoral votes and the election would be thrown into the
House of Representatives, where Bush would likely win.
If Gore's supporters can get three electors to outright defect,
Gore would take the lead. In that case, both houses of Congress
would have to vote to dispute the Gore electors.
The GOP has a nine-vote majority in the House, but the Senate is
tied 50-50 - and Gore holds the tie-breaking vote until Jan.
20.
A group called Citizens for True Democracy has made Arpaio one of
the biggest targets for a potential defection, although Arpaio
said he can't figure out why.
"I know what I'm going to do. I'm going to vote for Bush. I
expect to be there, with my uniform and my gun," he said.
Democratic operative Bob Beckel has acknowledged that he's been
conducting research on GOP electors and that he planned to
"kidnap" them, although his colleagues have said he only used the
term figuratively.
"My message to him: If he tries to cross the line and makes
threats or intimidation, he'll be arrested," said Arpaio, who's
received national attention for running a sheriff's office that
has a mounted cavalry, a motorcycle posse and an air posse.
Two consultants just resigned from Beckel's political-consulting
firm in protest of his effort to sway electors.
"I did not think it was in my best interests or those of my
clients to be associated in any way with this activity, so I
resigned," one of the consultants, Ben Chao, said.
David Enrich, head of Citizens for True Democracy, said he
disavows Beckel's tactics.
"That seems entirely inappropriate," said Enrich, who argued that
electors should vote for Gore because he won the national popular
vote.
Enrich insists he still hasn't located a single Bush elector
who's considering switching, and the Bush campaign is working
hard to ensure that everybody is on board - and that all their
electors are able to get to their state capitals to vote today.
