-Caveat Lector- THE TIMES MONDAY SEPTEMBER 10 2001 Surge in violence threatens talks FROM STEPHEN FARRELL IN JERUSALEM A WAVE of violence across Israel, the West Bank and Gaza - including the first suicide bombing by an Israeli Arab - threatened yesterday to derail the prospect of peace talks between the Israeli Foreign Minister, Shimon Peres, and the Palestinian leader, Yassir Arafat. Seven people died in total: three when a suicide bomber struck at a railway station in the coastal town of Nahariya, a teacher and driver were shot dead in an attack on a school bus in the Jordan Valley, and a car bomb exploded at a busy crossroads northeast of Tel Aviv. Israeli forces killed a suspected bomber in Gaza, and launched retaliatory helicopter attacks on Palestinian buildings in Ramallah, Jericho and Jenin. The office of the Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, identified the Nahariya bomber, who left three dead and scores of others injured, as one of one million Arabs who live within Israel itself. This is certain to increase tensions among an Israeli population that has been shocked by the support among previously moderate Israeli Arabs for the 11-month intifada.
