Now that membership on the UC Culture List is pushing 100, it may behoove us to revisit the origins of that staid and genial discussion and announcement group of the utmost refinement.
The Culture List was begotten in the throes of an unseemly foodfight concerning pesto on the main UC List in August of 2003. To read up on it, just search for "pesto" in the UC List archives at www.purple.com/list.html. Back in the day, denizens of the UC List were not even remotely as elegant and raffine as we are today. In fact, it embarrasses me to read some of the stuff we wrote back then.
Be that as it may, our humble Jeff stepped in and voila hey presto a new list was conceived and dedicated to the proposition that there actually was a modicum of culture in this hip and trendy hood and that it was worth writing about, in a delicate and seemly fashion. If you read over the archives, you'll find poetry, movie and music reviews, and thoughtful reflections on culinary matters.
Here is the first archived message from the Culture List, dated 8/14/2003:

And sign your posts, dammit, you ungracious rube. Where were you born, in a > barn in upstate Pennsylvania, you blinging hayseed? Don't make me come over > there! Fwiw, guys, I'm now unsubscribed from culture. I stayed on just long enough to get the subject line right, which I accidentally got distracted from doing promptly. I have added culture to the various archives and added a search link on list.html. Please avoid cross-posting to univcity. The purpose of this list was to give you guys a place to wax eloquent, be verbose, pretend email = IM, and so forth, as you felt (correctly, imho) that this wasn't fully welcome at the volume level you wanted on univcity. If someone does cross-post, please have the courtesy to remove the cross-posting from your reply so that a single mistake doesn't spawn a long thread on univcity.
